The South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) has awarded the winners of the Women’s Basketball League a total of SSP2.4m in prize money. The announcement was made following the conclusion of the league’s championship game, which saw the Lionesses defeat the Phoenixes by a score of 87-74.
The prize money is intended to encourage and support the growth of women’s basketball in South Sudan. The Lionesses, who finished the regular season with a perfect record, were awarded SSP1.5m for their championship victory. The Phoenixes, who finished as runners-up, received SSP900,000.
The SSBF has been actively working to promote and develop basketball in South Sudan, and the Women’s Basketball League is just one of several initiatives aimed at achieving that goal. The league was established in 2019 and has since grown in popularity, with more teams and players participating each year.
The awarding of prize money to the league winners is a significant step forward for women’s basketball in South Sudan. It not only provides financial support to the teams and players but also helps to raise the profile of the league and attract more fans and sponsors.
The SSBF has stated that it will continue to support and invest in women’s basketball in South Sudan, with plans to expand the league and provide more opportunities for young women to participate in the sport.
In addition to the prize money, the SSBF also recognized several individual players for their outstanding performances during the league. The Lionesses’ Rejoice Unwana was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, while the Phoenixes’ Abuk Deng was recognized as the league’s top scorer.
