According to an official source, President Salva Kiir and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar will
meet on Monday to discuss the firing of the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs and the
switching of ministries. This is according to Puok Both Baluang, Dr. Riek Machar’s interim press secretary.
“We have learned that a meeting between the president and first vice president is scheduled to discuss the most recent breach of the agreement, including the president’s unilateral removal of the ministers of defense and veteran affairs on March 3 and the Republican Order switching the defense and interior ministries. Monday will be the date of the meeting, says Baluang.
A month after Pope Francis pleaded with the unity administration to restore long-lasting peace in the nation, Machar’s aid added that the emergency meeting at the presidency level will attempt to end the most recent impasse.
By use of a Republican Decree, President Kiir ousted Minister Angelina Teny on Friday night
and gave his party control of the Defense Ministry.
Also, he dismissed General Mahmoud Solomon, the interior minister, and gave the SPLM-IO
control of the interior ministry.
The Machar camp, on the other hand, denounced the change and demanded that the ministries that had been removed and switched back be reinstated.
The republican ordinances, according to press secretary Baluang, are unilateral and in breach of Chapter One of the 2018 peace agreement.
