On Monday, President Salva Kiir led a group of mourners to Juba International Airport to receive the body of the late General Mathok, who passed away on March 1, 2023, after a brief illness.

General Mathok was a war veteran and a member of the national parliament, and he died while receiving medical treatment in Thailand. The President was present at the airport to pay his respects to the deceased general.

Last week, the Governor of Warrap State, Manhiem Bol Malek, spoke highly of General Mathok, describing him as a committed leader during South Sudan’s struggle for independence.

Mathok was also a former deputy minister of the interior and hailed from the state. As a sign of respect for the fallen leader, Governor Malek declared three days of mourning.

General Mathok’s contributions to the nation and his role in the independence struggle will
always be remembered. He was a courageous and dedicated leader who served his country
with distinction. His passing is a great loss to the people of South Sudan.
