At South Sudan’s Nimule Game Reserve, the Director-General of the Ministry of Wildlife
Conservation and Tourism has accused members of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces of
repeatedly poaching wild animals.
According to Lt. Gen. Khamis Adiang Diing, the most recent incident occurred on February 28, 2023, when an elephant was fatally shot with a PKM machine gun close to the Ugandan border.
General Adiang claimed that he believes UPDF soldiers are present in the military base, but we were unable to confirm this.
He claimed that the Ugandan government consistently infiltrates South Sudan’s territory and murders wild animals, particularly elephants.
“In this most recent occurrence, which occurred last week, we discovered that the elephant had been shot with PKM when we investigated the carcass of the animal.”
The Ugandan military stationed in Panchalla, a location close to the international border, carried out this operation.
According to the wildlife officer, foreign forces hunt elephants from Nimule Park for their tusks.
“We have reported the incident to the Moya district commissioner in Uganda so that we may
work together to put an end to Ugandan forces’ violations of South Sudanese territory.”
